Home of the World’s First Rodeo

Pecos is the largest city in Reeves County, Texas. It is situated in the Pecos River valley, some 80 miles southwest of Odessa. Pecos is not only well-known for ranching, agriculture, and oil/gas production, it is also recognized for its association with the local cultivation of cantaloupes and for being home to the World’s First Rodeo in 1883. Around 9,000 people call the city of Pecos home, and in 2012 it appeared on the Forbes 400 as the second fastest-growing small town in the United States.

Pecos is one of the numerous towns in western Texas organized around a train depot during the construction of the Texas and Pacific Railway. In the late ’60s, oil and gas production became very important to the Pecos economy and many oil and gas companies had offices and crews based in Pecos. Today, the oilfield industry has drawn many people to Reeves County and oil-related activity continues to drive economic growth.
